TAAFI-Inspiration-Studies

So this weekend I attended the first ever Animation Festival here in Toronto, TAAFI and I must say I was incredibly inspired, especially the panel on Style vs. Design by Marlo Meekins Nick Cross and John K.

What really caught my attention was Marlo's "Good Artist Pie Chart" in which she uses in her class.  It's a simple pie chart broken into thirds, one third is "a study of other artists", another third is "drawing from your imagination" and the other third is "studying from life".  I loved this chart so much that I'm implementing it into my weekly studies.  So each week I'm going to do a study of each section of that pie chart to keep me drawing/painting.

So far here's the first two thirds of my pie this week, both studies were under 20 minutes to keep my speed up.

The tree trunk was a study of lighting from a photograph I collected off of Google.  I only used a solid brush to focus on the colour and visual blending.

And the second small piece is a colour and lighting study from some concept art for the new Disney TV cartoon, Gravity Falls.  The colour in that show is fantastic so I know I'm going to be studying it a lot.

Let's hope I can keep this up for the rest of the summer AND into the new school year!

  1. Honestly, that's such a great idea. It's so simple, but probably extremely effective. Call me sold. I might throw this into my current rotation of exercises. Awesome stuff.
