Finally some drawing this year! We're gearing up for a full colour leica reel/animatic for our Storyboarding class and we finally got a chance to be creative and draw.
So here are my main characters for my scene Charlie Mullen and Marlon the wood nymph. With these two I'll be boarding a scene then colouring it and compositing it in After Effects.
So here's the first step, the designs! I'm so excited I get to draw trees again!

First Major Lighting Render
For our lighting and rendering class we had to UV wrap, texture and light this kitchen provided by our teacher (from 3drenders.com).
I wanted to go for a warm, comforting feeling with my kitchen drawing colours from the back splash tiles I found from CG textures and colours in the 1950's.
Most textures are from CG Textures, my teacher's collection as well as Deviant Art. Rendered in Mental Ray, Maya 2012.

Life Drawing - 3rd year!
So it's been a rusty start of life drawing this fall. Tackling Maya was a bit of a challenge but it seems a bit easier now, which means I've had more time to draw!
Here's a selection of drawings from the beginning of the semester to reading week.

TAAFI-Inspiration-Studies
So this weekend I attended the first ever Animation Festival here in Toronto, TAAFI and I must say I was incredibly inspired, especially the panel on Style vs. Design by Marlo Meekins, Nick Cross and John K.
What really caught my attention was Marlo's "Good Artist Pie Chart" in which she uses in her class. It's a simple pie chart broken into thirds, one third is "a study of other artists", another third is "drawing from your imagination" and the other third is "studying from life". I loved this chart so much that I'm implementing it into my weekly studies. So each week I'm going to do a study of each section of that pie chart to keep me drawing/painting.
So far here's the first two thirds of my pie this week, both studies were under 20 minutes to keep my speed up.
The tree trunk was a study of lighting from a photograph I collected off of Google. I only used a solid brush to focus on the colour and visual blending.
And the second small piece is a colour and lighting study from some concept art for the new Disney TV cartoon, Gravity Falls. The colour in that show is fantastic so I know I'm going to be studying it a lot.
Let's hope I can keep this up for the rest of the summer AND into the new school year!

Lots of BG's - El Flamingo
SO our film is finally done (as I hear) and is in the wonderful hands of audio mix-masters for final levels. Once it's online I'll be sure to link it.
Now I can at least post up more of my background work for the film. I felt that these ones came out the strongest in the end, the first being a colour sample for my own studies while the latter colour palates were more for the film.
All of the above BG's were drawn and painted by me, however the biggest painted piece I did was the opening pan which was drawn by fellow classmate Devin Cherubini. Please view at full size, it is one mother of a pan.

Semester 4 Layouts - Tonal Studies
It's almost the end of the semester so here's another little update while I procrastinate.
Here is my big project for Layout this semester. We were to create two environments of what ever we'd like then using dramatic lighting create a tonal study for mood and story using only the lighting.
These are more conceptual lighting studies as opposed to plotted light sources, focusing on that mood. For mine I wanted one to be a bit more technical with some architectural elements and the other to be predominately organic because I love drawing organic layouts.
